Shredded Tofu on a Bun

These BBQ Tofu Sandwiches are a quick and tasty plant based meal. Shredded tofu is seasoned, sautéed, and coated in tangy BBQ sauce for a flavourful filling.

Pile it onto toasted buns and add your favourite toppings like coleslaw, red onion, or sliced cheese. It’s an easy weeknight dinner or lunch option.

Recipe

This recipe makes about 5 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack extra firm tofu

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • ½ cup BBQ sauce

  • Burger buns

  • Optional toppings: sliced red onion, sliced cheese, coleslaw

Equipment:

  • Plate

  • Grater

  • Bowl

  • Measuring cups and spoons

  • Frying pan

  • Mixing spoon

  • Spatula or another spoon

Directions:

  1. Grate the Tofu – Using a grater, shred the extra firm tofu.

  2. Season – Mix the shredded tofu with garlic powder and paprika.

  3. Cook the Tofu – Heat a pan over medium heat, add the tofu, and cook for a few minutes. Add BBQ sauce and mix well until evenly coated. Cook for another 5 minutes until heated through.

  4. Toast the Buns – Lightly toast the buns for extra flavour and texture. (optional)

  5. Assemble – Place shredded tofu on the bun, top with coleslaw, chopped red onion, and cheese or extra BBQ sauce.

Storage:

  • Store ingredients separately for the best longevity and assemble before eating.

  • Burger buns can be stored at room temperature for 2-4 days, in the refrigerator for a week, and in the freezer for 2-3 months.

  • Store the shredded tofu in the fridge for up to 4 days in an airtight container. 

    • Alternatively, you can store the shredded tofu in the freezer for 2-3 months. Note that freezing tofu can make it more porous, which is good for absorbing sauces, but freezing can also make it slightly chewier.
