An Apple’s Journey

An Apple’s Journey

Adapted From: Food Share’s Plant Part Progression
Age: JK-grade 3
Key Learning: Learn about the process of a plant’s growth from seed to fruit
Equipment: None
Type: Standalone activity

Directions

  1. Using their bodies, students will act out the life of an apple. Together as a group you will grow from seeds to trees!
  2. First, you will act out the apple seed. Squat down, wrap your arms around yourself and make yourself into a ball as small as you can be. What do you need in order to start growing?
Leaders: Go around to each student and act out/sound out watering each seed
  3. You are now starting to grow roots. Sit on the ground and slowly stretch out your legs as you take in the water and nutrients.
Leaders: Continue to walk around and water the students with rain
  4. You are now growing your stem, stand up tall with your legs hip-width apart and your arms down by your sides. You are now a strong stem.
  5. Bend one knee and touch your heel to your opposite ankle, keeping toes on the ground. Reach your arms up and stretch your fingers wide- these are your branches and leaves. Reach your fingers up and grab the sun’s rays for energy.
  6. Still standing, cross your outstretched arms at the elbow and hold the base of your palms together, with fingers out for petals. Twinkle your fingers to attract the bees to pollinate your petals.
  7. Leaders: Walk around to each student and pretend to be the bee, pollinating their apple blossoms
  8. Roll back into a ball as you are now an apple!
Leader: Go around to each student and pick or eat up all the apples!
