Garden/Nature Scavenger Hunt

Garden/Nature Scavenger Hunt

Adapted From: Ontario Eco-Schools’ Nature Scavenger Hunt
Target Age: K-5
Key Learning Goals: Demonstrate awareness of natural and built environment through free and guided exploration
Equipment Necessary: bags to collect findings, lists of items to find, pens
Activity Type: Standalone outdoor activity

Directions

  1. Have students divide into small groups of 2-4. Go through the list of items that all groups are to find in the garden/yard.
  2. Give each group a brown paper bag to use for collecting their items. Remind them that all of the items they collect need to fit in the bag and that they have to already be on the ground.
  3. If groups finish early, give them bonus items to find (such as something brown, something bumpy, something soft, something hard, etc.)
  4. Once all groups have collected all their items, have each group share what they found. Were some items easier than others to find? What did the students learn about the space by doing this activity?
  5. How else can the students categorize all the collected items? For example, can you sort them by things that are edible and things that are not?
  6. Once the activity and discussions are completed, return items back to where they came from.
